No! Library research databases do not require use of the virtual private network (vpn) in order to access them. This includes both the desktop client installed on all Kenyon computers and the remote.kenyon.edu website. 

Library databases will always recognize when you are on campus but to access them off campus, simply search as you normally would and you will be asked to login and authenticate the first time you click on a result. After that, the proxy server should recognize you as long as your browser session is open.
