To access a row, simply turn the handle until the shelves move to create enough space to enter the row. Some helpful hints for using the compact shelving include:

  • Call number signs at the ends of each row tell you which books are located on the shelves.
  • Check neighboring rows before turning a crank to make sure they are all clear of people and obstructions.
  • Do not attempt to move more than 3 rows at a time. Doing more may decrease the lifespan of the shelving mechanics.
  • Use the kickplates at the bottom of each row of shelving should you find yourself in the middle of a row while it starts to move.
